On January 27, wolf R 28 was located 12 miles south of Three Forks, Montana. The radio collar was on mortality mode. On January 29, FWS Special Agents retrieved the body of R 28 and submitted it to the Bozeman Lab. Preliminary investigation indicated that the wolf had been shot several times. R 28 was a 130 pound male wolf that was reintroduced into Yellowstone National Park in 1996. His mate, R 27, was recently returned to the Park from the Nye, Montana area. One of R 27's pups continues to travel in the Nye area and its tracks were observed around a deer kill.
