New Yellowstone wolves being released!

4/2/96.

Eleven of the 17 new wolves from Canada which
have been held in acclimation pens since January
are being released this evening (April 2) into
Yellowstone National Park.

The other six will be released shortly.

Apparently the release came because the wolves
have had time to mate and become accustomed to
the area and local diet. Since pups are born
in late April to early May, the wolves will need
time to seek den sites.

The emergence of grizzly bears from their winter
hibernation also prompted the release.

Some may recall that last year it took a few
days before the penned wolves ventured out of their
enclosures for good.

Updates will follow on the details.
