Defenders of Wildlife, which has a privately-financed fund to compensate
owners of livestock who suffer depredation from wolves in the Northern
Rocky Mountains, has announced that it will make its first compensation
due to the action of a wolf from last year's reintroductions.Defenders of Wildlife said Jan. 18 that it will pay an Emigrant, Montana,
couple $258 for their loss of 2 sheep. The sheep were recently killed
by Yellowstone wolf B3, which was apparently dispersing from the Crystal
Bench pack in search of a mate. B3 travelled northward from Yellowstone
into the Paradise Valley about 20 miles north of Gardiner, Montana.B3 was captured in just a half hour once efforts were began. B3, a black
male, is presently in the Rose Cr. enclosure in Yellowstone Park awaiting
the arrival of a female wolf from British Columbia.
