Tentative ID numbers for new YNP wolves

8/12/96.

I've learned that the new pups in Yellowstone this year have
been tentatively assigned the following numbers:

LEOPOLD PACK
Three pups, two gray and one black, nos. R54, 55, 56. Sex unknown.

ROSE CREEK PACK
Three pups, nos. R51, 52, 53. Sex unknown.

SODA BUTTE PACK
This pack is presently in captivity and will be released in mid-October. It has three pups, nos. R43M, 44, 45.

NEZ PERCE LONE FEMALE
No. R27F give birth to five pups. All survived. One was injured in a
leg-hold trap. Its leg had to be amputated. It is now in a Minnesota
facility. One pup has been captured. Three remain with their mother.
Their numbers are R46, 47, 48, 49, 50.

Yellowstone wolves are assigned the prefix "R", such as wolf R9F, the
alpha female of the Rose Creek Pack.

Wolves reintroduced and born in central Idaho are assigned the prefix
"B".
