Unexpected massive springtime exodus of bison from Yellowstone threatens slaughter by Montana Department of Livestock.

After a winter when only eleven bison were killed by Governor Racicot's gunners at the Montana Department of Livestock, late spring snow has prompted a massive movement of bison out of the west boundary of the Park onto the Gallatin National Forest.

Over 250 bison are outside the Park. Many are milling on or near the U.S. 191 speedway. Already one bison has been hit by a semi-truck. Buffalo Nations reports that many of the bison are cows about to calf.

Current regulations allow bison outside the Park until 60days before cattle arrival on the Forest Service grazing allotment. Although DOL did not honor the agreement last winter, the situation is worse now in that it is less than sixty days before the cattle arrive.

Buffalo Nations reports that so far DOL has not pulled out its guns. Unfortunately, the deep slushy snow makes it difficult to haze the bison back into the Park. . . . Ralph Maughan

Buffalo Nations suggests people do the following:

"If you are in the area...come volunteer cooks and field volunteers are needed.

If your commitments will not allow you to be there physically....
make a call or write a letter on earth day...
