The US Fish and Wildlife Service discovered last Thursday that the mate of the missing male wolf (believed slain) has born a litter of 7-8 pups.US Fish and Wildlife official Joe Fontaine was tracking the female to see if she had denned when he discovered her with 7-8 newborn pups. He said the mother and pups seemed to be in good condition.
Fish and Wildlife spokesperson Sharon Rose said that since the wolf no longer had a pack or a mate to supply her with food, biologists would bring in carcasses. "Without human assistance in this situation, it is unlikely that she alone would be able to raise the pups," Rose said.
The wolf and her pups are in the vicinity of Red Lodge, Montana; not Yellowstone Park where she was introduced as part of the Rose Creek pack.
